Well-Formed Document Manager

The Well-Formed Document Manager (WFDM) is a content management system (CMS) that promotes true multipurpose publishing. Based on Open Source technologies, and supported by Scribe’s Open Publishing philosophy, the Well-Formed Document Manager is designed to fit seamlessly into the processes, business models, and needs of the research, archive, and publishing communities.

WFDM allows content to be edited, stored, managed, searched, retrieved, and exported into any format. The system accepts content in a variety of formats (e.g., microfilm, print, Word files, mechanical files, etc.). Designated personnel can edit the content at any stage from any location, within the system or in application files. The WFDM stores content so that it can be automatically searched, retrieved, output to the Web, and multipurpose published. All content is held as well-formed documents. Thus, this system can become a standard for all current, or future, publishing needs.

Because of Scribe's experience, we have built our system to handle all types of publications. The Well-Formed Document Manager can accommodate complex, historic, multilingual publications. We have developed it to handle historic manuscripts, critical editions, or variant text traditions.

The Well-Formed Document Manager comprises four integrated modules

• Well-Formed Document Module:
  • Enables the creation of XML text from various formatted data sources (e.g. Microsoft Word)*
  • Data validator and importer, which ensures data integrity as it enters, or exits, the system

• Digital Content Repository:
  • Content archive and storage
  • Full text searching (including metadata)
  • Content retrieval allows you to gather content in unlimited ways
  • Provides detailed reports on content
  • Connects to multimedia
• Dynamic Visual Editor:
  • Sophisticated access control
  • Edit text online (WYSIWYG editor)
  • Handles complex (multilingual) text structure with extensive indexed metadata.
  • Multi-level revision control functionality
  • Integrated with the Digital Content Repository Module
• Multipurpose Publishing Module:
  • Publish the XML text in various forms
  • Serve content on the Web, or output HTML
  • Create Word, QuarkXPress, or Adobe InDesign files
  • Output almost any type of e-book (e.g., Open E-book, Kindle)
  • Parsing engines allow content to be exported to any format
  • Custom exporters already handle: Laridan, Libronix, and other specialty electronic formats

* Through Scribe's services of OCR, data conversion, or data entry, materials can be accepted from any format. We can also work with you to train you how to enter materials into the WFDM.
